Tues 22nd Sept 1998 Worthington Cup round 2 2nd leg at Kenilworth Road against Ipswich town then of the Championship and ourselves League One. Ipswich had led from first leg 2-1 and within the first 10 mins had scored to increase lead to 3-1 on agg.
They held lead and went in at half time 1-0 up. Then the turn around we scored 2 goals in space of 10 mins to lead 2-1 on night and make tie level on agg at 3-3.
90 mins had been played so into extra time we go. With Ipswich on the back foot it was all us in first half of extra time and we got our just rewards when Steve Davis heads in from a corner for 3-1 on night but more crucially us leading 4-3 on agg. We go into the 2nd half of extra time still on top but not able to add to our score.
Then disaster, with 2 mins remaining Steve Davis scores an own goal. The goal makes it 3-2 to us but 4-4 on agg and with the extra away goal now Ipswich would go through on away goals.
As the 90mins draw to a end I can't remember how much added time there was maybe 3 or 4 not sure. It was the final min of added time and we had a corner. Everyone is up, even our keeper. The corner is taken from our left by Matthew Spring, I suppose from fatigue and 2 hours if football it's not exactly a perfect corner. It was a in swinger but he started it a bit too far out. The then Ipswich goalie Richard Wright had made his mind up to come and claim it to relieve the pressure. He's struggling, he's got too much underneath it and is now outstretched to reach it with one hand. His finger tips get to ball but he can only flick it straight on to my head mid penalty area. Didn't have time to think and just guided a loopy header straight back over every one into the goal. We had done it 4-2 on night 5-4 on agg. The greatest feeling I've ever had in my 15yrs at the club as a player.
I get goose bumps now when I watch the goal go in everytime I've seen it! A remarkable match and one I will never forget.
