Darren started his career at York City where he was in the side that won 3-0 at Old Trafford in the League Cup in 1995 before signing for Sunderland in 1996 where he went on to make over 250 appearances for the club and scored the winning goal against Middlesbrough, his hometown club in 1997 effectively relegating them.
