Ian Marcus: an encounter with Norman Hunter

Nearly 30 years ago I took my six-year-old son to watch Leeds United versus Manchester United at Elland Road. We were very kindly the guest of Mr Edward Ziff, well-known Leeds based property investor and philanthropist. At half time we ventured into the directors dining room and my son, accompanied by Edward’s son, Ben (aged 7) made straight for the cakes and sandwiches.

As we stood there I pointed to a middle-aged man leaning up against the bar and said to my son “do you know who that is“? He shook his head and I said, “that’s the man who makes Vinnie Jones look like a pussycat!” And I turned to Ben and asked him the same question. He calmly replied “oh yes, that’s Mr Hunter”. Mr Hunter I said? That’s very formal. To which Ben replied: “well, he is my school teacher!”

Of course it was none other than Norman “bites yer legs“ Hunter, the Leeds and England legend footballer, probably the most feared man to play the game!
