The 24th of May 2008 is logged in my memory as the most important sporting day of my life.
In my mind it is a series of still photographs which awaken the feeling of euphoria of the day and, actually, the memories of two seasons which surround that 95 minutes.
Flame burners roaring into life as two football teams walk on to the Wembley turf. The black and amber of Hull and bright red Bristol City colours on a bright and sunny day. And I felt so proud.
A moment frozen in time as Dean Windass sticks out his right foot, poised to meet a pass from Fraizer Campbell. In that moment, you know that there is only one place the ball is heading.
The ball hits the back of the net and 40,000 Hull City fans rise in slow motion as a roar erupts around the stadium.
My sporting hero, Ian Ashbee, climbing the steps to accept the trophy which signifies Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League after 104 years of trying. In that photo, I see him wiping his hands on his shirt before shaking the hands of the officials.
I had waited 42 years to see my team reach the top tier of English football and my photographic memories reawaken many happy feelings that flood back so that I remember and relive that day.
