Paul Jones: 1966, Northampton Town v Fulham

Excited to be amongst a record crowd (24,523), I stood at the front of the Main Stand, my eyeline just above pitch level. It was a vital match for the Cobblers to win to retain their place in the First Division.

At half-time with a 2-1 lead confidence was high. But the mood was to change dramatically. John Machin 'scored' but the goal was disallowed. George Hudson 'scored' at the same time as the linesman fell over and the referee claimed that he did not see the ball cross the line but I did!

Much worse was to follow as Fulham scored three times without reply. At the final whistle frustration, anger and disappointment were the overriding emotions but as time has moved on, now 45 years later, I feel fortunate and grateful to have experienced Cobbler's only season in the premier division and to have had the opportunity to watch live Ian St John, Ian Callaghan, Tommy Smith, Denis Law, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Gordon Banks and many other 'stars' of the 60s.
