With such a fantastic career John Aldridge had plenty of matches and moments
to choose from but when John was asked to name his favourite memory on Twitter he
replied with two words:
"Easy! Istanbul!"
Showing his love for Liverpool John's favourite memory is watching the 2005 Champion's League final at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, where on an amazing evening Liverpool found themselves trailing 3-0 at half time to Italian giants AC Milan. Seemingly heading for certain defeat, inspired by Steven Gerrard and a half time team talk from Rafa Benitez, Liverpool staged one of the greatest comebacks of all time to level the game with goals from Gerrard, Smicer and Alonso. Extra time produced no more goals and Liverpool remarkably completed the comeback with a 3-2 victory on penalties to the delight of the large contingent of Reds supporters who celebrated long into the night!
John Aldridge made 673 appearances in a 19 year career, in that time he scored 363 goals, 330 of which were scored in England making him the sixth highest goalscorer in the history of English football. In 1987 Aldridge signed for his boyhood club Liverpool playing 104 times and scoring 63 goals. Playing alongside Peter Beardsley and John Barnes he was the season's leading goalscorer with 26 as Liverpool won the league title by 9 points from Manchester United. Aldridge became the first non Basque player ever to sign for Real Sociedad and scored 40 goals in 75 appearances, on returning to the UK he set a new goalscoring record in his first season at Tranmere, scoring 40 goals. John appeared 69 times for the Republic of Ireland, scoring 19 goals and appeared at two World Cup tournaments, he also managed Tranmere for 5 years.
