The 1987 Uefa Cup Final in Dundee.
My memory of the final was through a home movie camera lens. In those days, images meant so much to me. Perhaps it the was society of Dundee in general at that time. Being unemployed, this final was somehow worth more than just the football: it was about me and us! The film that was to become 'Little Giants' (the meaning is anything you want it to be!) is now on YouTube. It was made on a cheap budget - like United: around £20!
As the game progressed, I had a unique feel of the game - my hands frozen in anticipation and warmth and in control. My eye focus was sure and as steady as possible. The end was particularly moving - for one and only time victory or defeat it just did not seem to matter. Just pride and emotion. The end of the film captures many things that happened on that day - yet, it was the colour of the sky, the cup in the distance, the pain of the players bootless feet on grass (my feet had pins and needles), the different angles of the players as they moved past me: in joy and sadness, the police dog in empathy, the waving flags in masses and the surprise of the Goteborg players. It was a great experience, and I myself learned a lot about myself and my situation - My future success in MSc and MBA (with distinction) was in part due to the everything is possible feeling of that year.
Twenty years later, Dundee United used my material for a special DVD and Andrew Marr in his series 'A History of Britain' sought the material.
