Former Villa and England
midfielder Lee Hendrie favourite memory is of a European night at Villa
Park, UEFA Cup Quarter final on 17th March 1998 vs Athletico Madrid.
Villa were trailing 1-0 from the first leg and Villa Park was packed for
the return leg.
The Spanish side containing
the likes of Italian striker Christian Vierri increased their aggregate
lead in the first half when Caminero scored but Lee remembers the
evening as being unreal and the fans being absolute class as they roared
John Gregory's Villa team on, Ian Taylor equalised in front of the
Holte End in the 72nd minute and 2 minutes later Villa in their white
away kit scored again.
Lee won the ball in the Madrid half and played the ball into substitute Stan Collymore who hit a superb shot into the top corner to send Villa Park wild. Despite intense pressure Villa were unable to score the goal that would take them through to the semi finals as they went out on the away goal rule.

Although Lee says he was just a kid at the time he loved every minute of the game!
