Harold Wilson, the former Prime Minster, was a staunch Huddersfield Town fan. I did some work for him in the 60s and he spoke very knowledgeably about football, especially Huddersfield.
In those days of course "supporting" a football club like the present incumbent of 10 Downing Street does was genuine, not for PR purposes. When he was in office, Harold and I joked about closet blue nose Dennis Howell who was a top flight football referee (though he made Dowd look like Usain Bolt) who was also the MP for Small Heath.
Harold Wilson dreamed up a role for Dennis Howell because Harold had a sharp and mischievous sense of humour. He made him Minister of Drought and the day after he was appointed the heavens opened much like they are doing at the present time. Howell was immortalized at a stroke!
